Question: Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-RahimAsala'amu alaykum dear sheikh. I have a question about fasting. I attempted to fast last year during Ramadan and accidentally broke it several times and can't remember how many days I broke it and just found out that I had to make up the days before this Ramadan but I have no idea how many days to fast. Should I fast from now until Ramadan begins? It is about 16 days away would it be permissible to fast all that time just to be safe when I start Ramadan? Thank you for taking your time to read this. May Allah bless you.
Answer:

If you forgot the fact that you were fasting and ate or drank by mistake and discontinued as soon as you became aware, then you need not make up. If, however, you persisted in eating even after you became conscious of your mistake,  you ought to make up for it. You are required to make up any number of fasts you broke this way. You should do so before arrival of the next Ramadhan.
